The Linda Howarth Memorial Preschool opened its doors in the fall of 1978 as a licensed preschool facility in a classroom in South Canoe Elementary School. A group of parents, with the help of a teacher named Linda Howarth, worked hard to plan a parent participation preschool. During the summer of 1978, Linda was killed in an auto accident while on holidays on Vancouver Island. The parents of the pre-school re-named it the Linda Howarth Memorial Preschool in her memory.
The preschool remained in South Canoe Elementary School until increasing enrolment, and the need for a music room, made it necessary for the school to move. Relying on the dedication and hard work of parents and teacher Sherryll Kallies, the preschool found a new home in the basement of St. Andrews Presbyterian church until June of 1998.
Once again, the school began a search for a new location and with diligence and perseverance parents found the preschool another location. It was a portable located on Okanagan Avenue without a playground, washrooms, or kitchen facilities. Fundraising money, grants, donations and parent's personal time and energy went into making the portable into a play space for the children. Two years later another group of dedicated parents made possible the extension that has made our preschool what you see today.
